Abstract

Aims: This study aims to explore the existing teaching learning practices and its challenges in achieving quality education at tertiary level in Bangladesh, especially in the public universities.

Study Design: The study mainly followed qualitative research design.

Place and Duration of Study: The information has been collected from three public universities of Bangladesh namely Dhaka University (DU), Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), and Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU) between March and June 2024.

Methodology: The sample unit of the study are the teachers and students from the selected three universities. From a total of 385 respondents’ data has been collected, where 350 responses from students and 35 responses from teachers. Structured questionnaire using Likert scale is used to collect information. The collected data has been analyzed by using Microsoft Excel, and Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS). Descriptive analysis is used to report the findings of the study.

Results: From the study it is found that half of the students are satisfied with their department leadership. The result also focusses that almost 50% respondents are satisfied about availability of teachers in department, experiences of the teachers, and presentation quality of the course instructors. Around 30% of the respondents are satisfied about the use of multimedia classroom, supply of learning materials, access to the library facilities, and availability and access to internet facilities. The study also highlights that research support, participation in study abroad program, curriculum structure, training facilities for teaching and non-teaching staffs are the challenges for achieving quality education at Tertiary Level in Bangladesh.

Conclusion: Education plays an important role in the extension of economic growth and development, upliftment of living standards, and so many sectors of a country. The study recommended that authorities of universities should assure a cooperative teaching learning environment for the stake holders and quality assurance strategies and mechanisms should be developed under IQAC to assure the curriculum, teaching-learning facilities, and research support.
